Canadian Regulations of Bird Imports

  • CITIES
    Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and FloraCITES 1
    - species rare or endangered due to international trade
    -CITES import and export permits required

    CITES 2 -
    -concern over potential effects of uncontrolled trade
    CITES export permit required

    Virtually ALL Psittacines are CITES 1 or 2

    Species that do not require CITES documentation

  • peach-faced lovebirds
  • budgerigar (budgie)
  • cockatiel
  • ringnecked parakeet
  • WAPRIITA
    Wild Animal and Plant Protection and Regulation of International and Interprovincial Trace Act

CFIA Import Regulations

  • No import permit required for personal pet birds of certain species coming from the US in the company of their owners
  • health inspection and declaration of ownership and lack of contact with other birds for 90 days
  • does not include pigeons/doves or wild /domestic fowl
  • For countries other than the US,  import permits are required
  • Importation suspended from certain countries due to concerns with HPAI
  • 45 day quarantine period with recommendation that birds be treated for Chlamydophila psittaci
